Optech Fibres were invited to liaise with Honeywell to ascertain the cabling shortfalls at the new National Stadium at Wembley.
Optech were invited to site after a succession of companies had been onsite installing cabling between 54 main communication rooms. Much of the works were carried out by labour obtained from agencies and thus meant that many changes in manpower had arisen. This had contributed to the fact that the cabling, along with many other area’s had caused a Capital Project to run over budget and over time.
Optech arrived in the July 2006 with the intent of having to ascertain which cables ran to which locations as none had been correctly labelled and many pulled to the wrong locations. The pressure that the team was under to ensure that the site was ready for March 2007 was immense.
The project was well underway and the engineers were making regular reports back ensuring that Honeywell and the Wembley Commission were happy that the proposed completion date was looking considerably more likely. Our Project manager had requested that the teams work 12 hour days 6 days a week to ensure that all of the cabling was presented in their correct locations prior to the termination phase.
Once this was achieved our engineers set about termination and OTDR testing 378 No 24 core fibres, 7 to each of the 54 communications rooms, this totalling more than 18,000 terminations and OTDR tests.
In no small part, due to Optech’s experience, we had successfully delivered the communication section of the project including the rectification of the cabling issues three weeks ahead of the proposed completion date. This enabled the commissioning of safety systems to be completed prior to the ‘Ramp Up’ games where the England’s under 21’s hosted Italy in March 2007.
It was a major achievement to complete and an honour for our engineers to put a stamp on England’s pride.
