Optech Fibres have been tasked to desig, terminate and commision the fibre optic backbone to the control systems of a multitude of wind farms, on and off shore.

Optech Fibres have supplied technical data for our clients to provide a working solution to the remotestof locations. Crystal Rig was only one exampleof working to high standards in very harsh conditions. It became very apparent in the early days of working on the wind farms that the standard operations of terminating fibre would be pushed to the limits with lighting issues and sometimes sub-zero temperatures. Our engineers have proven that even with all the elements against them, we can still produce a network on time and on budget.
As mentioned the main issues were the weather. By its nature, a wind farmis the remotest of locations and given this it is crucial to apply logic in the pricing of such projects. Many a troubled night would be spent over whether or not one option would be more cost effective than another, but ultimately the best option for the environment and functionality would prevail. If any one thing has been learnt by our experience in this field it would be that we are at the mercy of the Gods on a day to day basis.
The main structure of the fibre networks vary from one wind farm to the next and also on the end users preference, but one thing that they all have in common is that resilience is critical. Most of the farms will allow for 100% spare capacity at each turbine with either a through splice to the next turbine or a dasy chain effect.
Our most recent completion was the farm at Hagshaw Hill. This job was completed in conjunction with Agrilek Ltd of Barrow-in-Furness, who as very close allies, we continue to service in this sector.
Optech Fibres have recently been in talks with consultants, Spurr Energy, to assist in the provision of pricing for further installations through out the UK and Europe.
